Over the years I have noticed various statistics regarding the amount of money spent on male-specific health issues as compared to female-specific health issues. Estimates have varied but are always in the same region – that is, for every £1-00 to £3-00 spent on male issues, £20-00 is spent on female issues.
Why is there this (at best) horrendous gap?
Now, don't get me wrong, I don't begrudge a single penny spent on saving a woman's life (it could be my wife or daughter) but why is there less being done to aid my son or, for that matter, me?
I once asked a surgeon why, when so much was done to screen for breast or cervical cancer, so little was done to screen for, say, prostate cancer. The response was that, if screening was provided for prostate cancer, “about 50% of the cancers found would not be life threatening”. I countered by saying that this implied that 50% WOULD be life threatening but this was shrugged off. I think that the response was intended to convey the fact that the lives saved would not be worth the effort. Imagine if such a statement was made regarding a women's health issue!
